Supporting Maputo Families

Tutela’s vision is that every child grows up in a safe and happy family.

We provide parenting courses to help Maputo families improve the care they give their children and we get alongside some of those that struggle most to help them meet their pressing needs.

Our Mozambican trainers provide rich activation sessions to encourage parents in their journey of raising children

Parenting Courses

Parent feedback has been very positive and we have testimonies of family conflict getting resolved as a result of what they have learned
— Jonny, Tutela Director

Our 8-session course is available for parents from all walks of life. It provides opportunities for parents to better understand their children's needs and how to create a happier more stable family home. We particularly focus on parents who have low incomes and will cover their transport costs so that they can attend our courses. Since 2016, Tutela has taken around 200 parents through our course which uses material from the International Child Development Programme. Our trainers are qualified Mozambicans who apply the material to suit the culture and values of the participants.

The Covid pandemic interrupted our ability to run these courses, but we are now re-launching the course in 2022.

Practical and Pastoral Support

We work to help struggling families to stay together and support them to live a more stable life. Many families in Maputo face tough circumstances where poverty is overwhelming and it is often the children who suffer most when life is hard. We work alongside 12 families in Maputo who have been referred to us because of their vulnerability. Some of these families have children with severe disabilities and they lack any form of support to raise these children. We help meet their most pressing needs and come alongside them to listen and build a supportive relationship. The aim is that they can both improve the care they give their children and find more stability with their own source of income.
